During the 2003 season when the Indians’ roster was loaded with rookies, Lawton was not in the starting line-up.

“It’s hard to say you get left out on a team as bad as ours,” he said then. “I mean, if you can’t play for a team this bad, who can you play for?”

Lawton made a “comeback” with the Indians in 2004 and became a very popular player in Cleveland. He was particularly upset midway through the 2003 season when, prior to a game at Jacobs Field as members of the Indians greeted fans as they entered the park, Lawton was approached by a little old lady.

“She must have been 100,” Lawton said, “and she told me, ‘I boo you every time you come to the plate, and I hope you start hitting so they can get rid of you.’”

So how did Lawton respond?

“What could I say to her. I just stood there, speechless, while she walked away. It was not a good time for me.”

He was traded to Pittsburgh in the winter of 2004–2005.
